Our appliances aren’t meant to last forever.

It may feel as though our appliances stick around longer than anticipated, but the truth is, they like to remain operable for anywhere from 10 to 15 years! Most appliances are made to last at least a decade, but of course, sometimes they might have a few kinks and issues down the road. Regardless of the timeframe, it’s best for any homeowner to look out for indicators that their appliances may be dying down quicker than anticipated.

Here you’ll be able to know what indicators to look out for in case you need to replace your appliance sooner.

Refrigerators

Your refrigerator should last you anywhere from 10 to 20 years. At a minimum, it should be in working condition until at least its 10th year. Something to note, the longer you have your refrigerator, the more costly its repair will be. So, just keep in mind that you might be better off purchasing a new refrigerator than repairing your 20-year-old refrigerator. On the other hand, if your refrigerator is still under 7 years old, you’re better off purchasing repairs.

If your refrigerator is leaking, isn’t producing ice, or is irregular with its temperature, chances are you can get replacement parts through the manufacturer if the warranty is still good. Even if the warranty is no longer active, you may still be fine just replacing parts for these quick issues. However, if you find your food spoiling before its expiration date, has constant condensation outside, or if the refrigerator is constantly running hot in the back or front, then it’s time to replace it altogether.

Washers & Dryers

Washers and dryers tend to come in pairs and leave in pairs. Whenever one is ready to replace, chances are its partner is ready to go also. Generally, these appliances can last up to 15 years at best, but usually, they’ll tap out around 10 years. However, they can begin to wear down and need replacement quicker if they begin to show some telling signs.

If your washer is constantly leaking, not filling correctly, or is continuously noisy, then it’s time to replace it. Sometimes you can repair a part or two and keep it steady for a few more years, but if the issues just continue time after time, then it’s best to replace it. Your dyer will experience other issues such as not drying clothes, being too noisy, or literally moving across the room. Like other appliances, sometimes these issues can be fixed with a simple repair or help from a professional. If you do go that route, consider the appliance’s lifespan and the cost of repair.

Ovens & Ranges

Ovens tend to last anywhere from 10 to 15 years also, but you might need a replacement if you notice it’s taking longer than usual to heat up. A working oven will heat up in minutes, cook evenly, and keeps its pilot light on if gas-operated. However, if you’re noticing your oven starts to scorch nearby appliances, begins to rust quickly, lets heat escape, or can’t keep a pilot light on, then it’s time to replace it.

Ranges last about the same amount of time an oven does. If cared for properly, they might even last longer. However, if you’re noticing the burners or hot plates aren’t properly heating up, the control and knobs don’t work, or if you smell gas more than usual, then it’s time to replace them. Generally, if the cost of repair is more than half the cost of buying a new range, then just replace it altogether.

Microwaves

Microwaves should only last 10 years max. But there are many signs that you should replace it quicker than the 10-year mark. If you notice the microwave produces smoke and sparks, smells like something is burning, creates an awful sound when operating, or doesn’t seal properly, then it’s time to replace it. Microwaves are typically inexpensive appliances and can easily be replaced. So, if that time comes along, just replace it rather than repair it as the cost of repair could just be the same as a new one.

Watching Your Appliances

Your appliances will tell you when they’re ready to go, so try not to ignore their signs. The last thing you want is an appliance on the brink of destruction because you constantly ignore its call for help. Be sure to keep an eye out and listen to how they operate. It could save you money knowing the difference between a repair and a replacement.
